The Powel Shoreline Restoration Implementation Project enhanced and restored along 1/4 mile of privately owned shoreline and 1.9 acre of marine nearshore and riparian habitat in Port Madison, Bainbridge Island by removing shoreline armoring, debris, and non-native fill, and removing invasive plants and installing native vegetation. Additionally, a fish screen was also installed on the pipe that draws water from the bay into the Powel’s saltwater pool, as requirted by permit. This project was Phase II of a two phased project and implemented the multi-stakeholder agreed upon design developed in Phase I, the Powel Shoreline Restoration Design Project, SRFB project #09-1961N. The objective was to restore lost salt marsh, intertidal habitats, and marine riparian habitat typically associated with shoreline armoring. Shallow intertidal habitat and salt marsh habitat is important to forage fish and juvenile salmonids, particularly ESA-listed Chinook, for migration, feeding, refuge and physiological transition.
