DESCRIPTION
Gorst Creek is in Kitsap County, draining to Sinclair Inlet. Gorst Ck. has high quality protected habitat for much of it's watershed, protected as a part of the Bremerton City water supply. This project is located on a private property where current conditions are compromised for salmonid spawning and rearing. There is significant bank erosion and sediment deposition that could suffocate redds and has replaced gravel in many areas that previously had spawning potential. This grant will finish the project permitting submission, make any necessary edits to designs and construct the project. Initial design work was funded by the Community Salmon Fund. This project will restore the in-stream and riparian habitat in 1200 linear feet of Gorst Creek located downstream from one of the first funded projects in the lead entity,CK Gorst 00-1111. The project as designed includes bank stabilization by means of bank re-grading, installation of large woody debris (LWD) and native riparian planting. Root wads will be strategically placed to protect high erosion areas and create fish rearing habitat. Root wads and other LWD will also be used to create much needed stream complexities by producing points of decreased water velocity, and creating pools and eddies (see design document). With project implementation, naturally occurring fine sediments will cycle through the reach and settle where appropriate rather than on gravel bars that are needed for spawning habitat.
