DESCRIPTION
Replaced a .61m cst culvert that had a hydraulic drop at the inlet and was identified as a fish passage barrier on Barker Creek, with a 34' x 14' bridge. Enhanced 150 ft. of stream with woody material and spawning gravel. The project is located on the Washburn’s' private property in the Barker Creek Watershed. The Salmonid Limiting Factors analysis reports that Barker Creek provides spawning and rearing habitat to Chinook, chum and Coho salmon; steelhead; and cutthroat trout. Chum are especially abundant in the mainstem where fish passage allows. This barrier removal in conjuntion with several fish passage projects downstream have improved fish access to the upper reaches of the creek. The undersized roadway culvert was replaced with a bridge to improve fish passage and restore stream functioning within the road prism. The bridge and stream restoration was approved by Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife criteria for fish passage. The roadway was restored and drainage improved to reduce turbid discharge to the creek. Woody material and spawning gravel has increased channel complexity, pool-to-riffle ratio, and sinuosity. The Kitsap Conservation District funded the design for the bridge and stream enhancement. Community Salmon Fund funded the stream enhancement portion of the project and FFFPP fundded the bridge and project implementation.
