DESCRIPTION
This project acquired the Close Property, which features nearly 560-feet of high quality nearshore habitat, an active feeder bluff, mature mixed-stand marine riparian forest, and a mixed-course sediment beach with large woody debris, sorted sediments, and associated aquatic habitats. The nearshore in the project area has been documented to support a great diversity of salmonid species and important prey resources, including chinook, chum, coho, pink, cutthroat, steelhead, sand lance, surf smelt, and herring. The project area may support other salmonid species, such as bull trout. This acquisition protects on-site habitats and functions important to the success of salmonids and their prey resources in the nearshore. The Close Property was identified as a priority conservation area, located within an at-risk drift-cell, in the Bainbridge Island Nearshore Assessment, a SRFB funded project. The acquisition is important to maintaining properly functioning conditions along a drift-cell that contains very sensitive habitats, including a stream subestuary/lagoon, a pocket estuary, and forage fish spawning areas. The Close Property was at risk of being sold & developed, but now is a significant part of a larger system of nearshore and terrestrial habitat conservation. This grant contributed to the acquisition of the nearshore portions (i.e. intertidal and marine riparian habitat) of the 64-acre Close Property, which abuts the 318-acre Gazzam Lake Park and Wildlife Preserve. The original sponsor for this project was the Bainbridge Island Land Trust, which transferred it to the City of Bainbridge Island and subsequently to the Bainbridge Island Metropolitan Park and Recreation District.
