DESCRIPTION
This is on phase of a multi-phase project that expanded a waterfront park from 27 to nearly 170 acres, with mature coastal forest and a mile of unspoiled beach. In less than three years, the Whidbey Camano Land Trust raised nearly $7 million to protect vital fish and wildlife habitat, and give hikers, beach walkers and birdwatchers the chance to explore a part of the island open to the public for the first time in over a century. In this phase, Island County and the WCLT acquired 13 acres of rare, low-bank waterfront on Barnum Point, 1/3 mile of private beach and 17 acres of private tidelands ("West Tract"). The only low-bank water access along Barnum Point, protection of this property will dramatically improve the public's access to more than 2/3 mile of adjacent public beach that is currently difficult to access. The Park is now a low-impact Natural Recreation Park, addressing the high need for beach access and public trails on Camano Island by providing diverse recreational opportunities, including swimming, fishing, kayaking, canoeing, photography, biking, picnicking, beach-combing and nature-viewing, while preserving natural processes and critical marine and salmon habitats.
