DESCRIPTION
The Livingston Bay Nearshore Acquisition Project - Phase II purchased and permanently protected 43 acres of important nearshore and marine riparian habitat in Livingston Bay. This fee acquisition is the second phase of a larger protection effort initiated in 2005 by the Whidbey Camano Land Trust and the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW), in which more than 3,000 acres of tidelands were acquired for permanent protection. The project tract includes a 10 acre pocket estuary that will be restored with funding secured from a separate proposal. The project will contribute to recovery of Puget Sound Chinook salmon and bull trout populations (both listed as threatened under the Federal Endangered Species Act). Protection of the pocket estuary is identified as a one of the highest priority actions in the WRIA 6 three-year implementation plan (April 2007). Livingston Bay is specifically identified in the Whidbey Basin’s Multi-species Salmon Recovery plan as a very high nearshore habitat protection priority for juvenile salmon and as a very high nearshore habitat restoration priority.
