DESCRIPTION
The Northwest Straits Foundation removed a fish passage barrier located on private property at the mouth of West Beach Creek on Orcas Island. Construction involved draining an impounded pond, removing the driveway/dam, and installing a 16 ft. countersunk culvert to allow fish access to over a mile of quality habitat for anadromous fish. Riparian vegetain was planted along the restored stream channel and large woody debris was installed to create scour pool formation, margin complexity and cover. Species supported by this restoration project include: juvenile Chinook, pink, coho, and chum salmon and cutthroat trout. Grant funds supported construction and vegetation maintenance as well as development and installation of an interpretive sign.
