DESCRIPTION
The Northwest Straits Foundation proposed the West Beach Creek Restoration Project to remove a fish passage barrier at the base of this fish bearing stream located on Orcas Island in San Juan County. The Foundation contracted with The Watershed Company for this planning project that completed hydrology and sediment analysis, a final design, permitting, and cultural resources review necessary for implementation. The barrier is created by twin culverts below the driveway to a private residence and business, which also creates a dam for a 0.5 acre pond which would be restored to an expanded estuarine and freshwater stream channel under the preferred alternative. Restoration will allow access to an additional 0.3 miles of the creek, much of it high quality riparian habitat, to anadromous fish. Here the stream reaches a second barrier at the county road crossing (West Beach Rd). Replacement of this second culvert is on the current San Juan County Public Works 6 Year Plan. This project will set the restoration up for successful implementation. The restored processes will provide rearing habitat for juvenile salmon and also to provide access to one of the few streams in WRIA 2 with the potential to provide habitat for salmon spawning. This President’s Channel - Waldron Island region was listed as a highest priority shoreline for juvenile salmon in WRIA 2 and restoration of salmon spawning habitat is a goal for salmon recovery in the San Juan Islands.
