The Jamestown S'Klallam Tribe used this funding to help acquire 60 acres of wetland and tidelands as a component of a larger restoration effort for Jimmycomelately Creek, located in eastern Clallam County (WRIA 17). Land acquisition is an essential part of the restoration project, which included the relocation of the creek channel and restoration of portions of the estuary. The creek channel alignment was altered in the 1920's or 1930's, resulting in a loss of gradient, fluvial energy, and sediment transport capability. Channel aggradation and severe habitat loss resulted in low flows, channel instability, fish passage blockage, scour and fill of redds, and increased flood frequency/severity causing landowners to further channelize the creek. This project was the first acquisition toward the vision of the Jimmycomelately Creek and Estuary. With this funding, the Tribe purchased the log yard in 2001. This property contained the remnants of the historic mouth of the JCL channel as well as extensive tidelands and intact salt marsh habitat along the lower end of Sequim Bay. The full restoration project could not proceed without this acquisition.
