DESCRIPTION
Clallam County will use funding to reconnect 0.8 miles of the Dungeness River with 112 acres of its historic floodplain by relocating a portion of the Army Corps east bank levee, relocating Towne Road, and adding habitat features to encourage natural river processes between R.M.1-1.8, in Sequim. Restoration will improve habitat conditions, restore riverine processes/functions and floodplain processes to support ESA-listed Puget Sound Chinook, Eastern Strait of Juan de Fuca Summer Chum, Coastal-Puget Sound Bull Trout, and Puget Sound Steelhead. To encourage recreation, walking trails are designed into the realigned levee. Constructed by the Corps in 1963, the current levee constrains the river channel, resulting in increased channel confinement, bedload aggradation, instability, and water quality impacts. Dikes on both sides of the Dungeness have disconnected the river from its floodplain and disrupted river processes which prohibits flood waters from dissipating and inhibits the river's natural ability to store excess sediment outside the channel. One of the portfolio of projects that extend from the Dungeness River mouth upstream to Canyon Creek (RM 10.7), levee setback and channel restoration in this reach provides floodplain and side channel habitat critically needed by salmon for spawning, rearing and migration. Awarded funds will be used for construction. Land acquisition is complete; riparian restoration planting has been initiated, design and permitting are underway.
