DESCRIPTION
This large-scale restoration project will restore approximately 112 acres of Lower Dungeness River floodplain by setting back the Army Corps of Engineers east bank levee (R.M. 1-2.7) in its new location. The goal is to reconnect the Dungeness River with its historic floodplain, improve habitat conditions and restore riverine processes and functions needed to support various salmon species included Dungeness Chinook. Constructed by the Corps in 1963, the current levee constrains the river channel, resulting in increased channel confinement, bedload aggradation, instability, and water quality impacts that are a factor in the current local shellfish closures. Dikes on both sides of the Dungeness have disconnected the river from its floodplain and disrupted river processes which prohibits flood waters from dissipating and inhibits the river's natural ability to store excess sediment outside the channel. Levee setback and channel restoration in this reach provides floodplain and side channel habitat critically-needed by salmon for spawning, rearing and migration. Riparian and instream habitat will also be restored. Priority species supported by these habitats are ESA- listed Puget Sound Chinook, Eastern Strait of Juan de Fuca Summer Chum, Coastal-Puget Sound Bull Trout, and Puget Sound Steelhead.
