This large-scale restoration project restored approximately 112 acres of Lower Dungeness River floodplain by setting back the Army Corps of Engineers east bank levee (R.M. 1-2.7) and relocating a road that bisected the floodplain. Floodplain restoration in this reach provided floodplain and side channel habitat critically needed by salmon for spawning, rearing and migration. By reconnecting the Dungeness River with its historic floodplain, habitat conditions were improved and riverine processes restored. Priority species supported by these habitats are ESA - listed Puget Sound Chinook, Eastern Strait of Juan de Fuca Summer Chum, Coastal-Puget Sound Bull Trout, and Puget Sound Steelhead. The river and floodplain reconnected almost immediately following construction of the setback levee and flood return channel. The flood return channel developed habitat features and now functions as an established side channel. Wetland and floodplain features are becoming established throughout the site. Salmon have been observed migrating through channels in the restored floodplain and salmon spawning has been observed at the margins between the river and the restored floodplain. Native vegetation establishment and weed control were key to the project's success. Accessible areas of the floodplain were planted with native vegetation. Weeds were monitored and treated as noted in the annual weed management plan. Some areas originally intended to be planted with native vegetation became inundated or were colonized by the seeds of abundant local native plants. Planting plans were adjusted accordingly. Monitoring stations were established to assess the growth of native vegetation.
