On November 6, 2012, North Olympic Land Trust closed on a 75 acre conservation easement along Jimmycomelately Creek. A one mile length of Jimmycomelately Creek and approximately 1,500 feet of tributaries thereto, is now permanently protected through the purchase of a conservation easement. This was the only unprotected riparian property within the lower 2 miles of Jimmycomelately Creek, and was the remaining major element for restoration and protection of the lower Jimmycomelately watershed, which has been in progress for many years. According to the Hood Canal/Eastern Strait of Juan de Fuca Summer Chum Salmon Recovery Plan, the lower 1-2 miles of the Jimmycomelately watershed must be restored and protected to effect and ensure recovery of the Strait population aggregate of Summer chum. “Protection, restoration and maintenance of the Jimmycomelately and Salmon/Snow Creek watersheds are of paramount importance. In both watersheds, the lower river sections (lower 1-2 miles) and the estuaries are targeted for restoration with several projects already implemented. These areas must be restored and protected to effect and ensure recovery of the Strait population aggregation.” Hood Canal / Eastern Strait of Juan de Fuca Chum Salmon were on the verge of extinction, and populations are recovering. This project was prioritized because of its importance to the continued recovery of the Hood Canal summer chum, a species that was as low as 7 adult spawners in 1999. In 2010, there was a high of 4,027 spawners (Jimmycomelately Ecosystem Restoration Monitoring Report 2004-2011 ). There are many reasons for this recovery, including a large scale restoration project lead by the Jamestown Tribe, including restoration of the estuary, and implementation of a successful broodstock program. Conserving this land along Jimmycomelately Creek is vital to the recovery of Summer Chum because it conserves river mile 1-2, critical habitat for this iconic species. This conservation easement links the currently protected stream reaches above and below the project site. Directly downstream is the Jimmycomelately restoration project, and upstream is state and federal forestland. The Jimmycomelately restoration project included restoration of the estuary, adjacent nearshore, and lower ½-mile of stream channel. This project is a vital piece of the Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe’s efforts to restore Jimmycomelately Creek, and ensure the recovery of Hood Canal Summer Chum. This conservation easement protects important spawning and/or rearing habitat for all Jimmycomelately salmon including Hood Canal / Eastern Strait of Juan de Fuca Chum Salmon, and Puget Sound Steelhead Trout, which are both Endangered Species Act listed salmon species, and Cutthroat Trout, and Coho Salmon. Mature to old growth riparian forest and channel conditions on the property are excellent, and this conservation easement will ensure it stays this way. No timber harvest, road building, or other development activities will be allowed to occur within the riparian forest. This easement also involved tremendous community support, and funding support from Puget Sound Acquisition and Restoration Fund through the Salmon Recovery Funding Board, Washington State Recreation and Conservation Office, and a grant from the Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe. Additionally, this project would not have been possible without the partnership and support of the Hood Canal Coordinating Council, the North Olympic Peninsula Lead Entity, and the Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe.
