DESCRIPTION
Meadowbrook Creek is the last freshwater tributary to out-migrating salmon species in the Dungeness River before entering Dungeness Bay in Sequim, WA, Clallam County. North Olympic Salmon Coalition improved access to valuable estuarine and off-channel habitat by enhancing and stabilizing the connection between Meadowbrook Creek and the mainstem of the Dungeness River. This work was part of the continuing effort to restore the floodplain and estuarine habitat of the lower Dungeness River and increase available rearing and transitional habitat for salmonids, including Chinook, coho, chum, and steelhead (NOPLE 2011 Dungeness Strategy). The availability of transitional habitat and mixing of fresh and salt water in protected embayment’s, side channels, and sloughs in estuaries are limiting factors in successful rearing of juvenile salmon throughout Puget Sound. The construction footprint restored 30 acres of estuarine habitat that allowed for restored tidal and estuarine processes to a total of 80 acres. Restoration work included: 1) demolishing and removing all structures, septic and utilities associated with the restaurant, as well as final design, permitting and construction of all the following: 2) removing dike and bank armoring from Meadowbrook Creek; 3) removing and re-contouring ~5 acres of estuary fill to historic salt marsh, dune and intertidal elevations; 4) creation of 3 new tidal lagoons and 3.4 acres of new estuarine habitat; 5) removing a nearshore groin; 6) removing nearshore armoring; 7) rerouting utilities underneath the project site to the New Dungeness Light Station; 8) removing ~172 creosoted pilings from the nearshore associated with a derelict wharf; 9) removing ~ 10 Tons of beached creosote debris from the Dungeness River delta, Meadowbrook Creek estuary and nearshore; 10) relocating a road intersection and its associated road fill diking ~750 feet away from the shoreline; 11) removing an undersized creosote bridge from the old road location and replacing it with a new bridge at the new road location to restore estuarine marsh processes and allow natural meandering of Meadowbrook Creek;12) realigning Meadowbrook Creek to reconnect floodplain habitat and installation of 25 wood habitat structures; 13) Planting 0.7 acres of salt marsh species; and 14) removing 0.1 acres of Japanese knotweed.
