DESCRIPTION
Between 2013-2019, this PSAR large capacity grant (Elwha River Revegetation Support Project-Phase II) provided critical support in helping to achieve the overall Elwha Revegetation Plan goals following dam removal. Of particular note was that this grant funded 100% of the revegetation effort from 2017-2019 as project funds elapsed in 2017. During the six-year life of this grant, PSAR funds were used to support several activities including; 1) funding Elwha Klallam Tribal crews to conduct weed control and install 225,000 native woody plants and 5,000 pounds of native grass seed on the dewatered Aldwell and Mills reservoir surfaces, 2) fund Washington Conservation Corps(WCC) crews to support overall revegetation activities (planting, grass seeding, exotic plant control, positioning wood, greenhouse support, and seed collection, 3) relocate large wood using a helicopter to create safe planting sites on 42 acres at the former Mills reservoir and 4) purchase 113,000 native plants for use on the project. Project revegetation goals including the establishment of early successional forests and the control of exotic vegetation on the former reservoir surfaces has been achieved. Revegetation activities on the Elwha River are being maintained by the Tribe with funding from other sources.
