DESCRIPTION
Removal of two mainstem hydroelectric dams as authorized under the Elwha Ecosystem and Fisheries Restoration Act (PL 102-495) began in the fall of 2011 and was completed in the fall of 2014. Removal of the dams has resulted in the conversion of over 800 acres of former reservoirs to a free flowing river. Large proportions of the former reservoirs have reverted to floodplain habitats characterized by islands, over flow channels and ground water fed channels that will be critical to overall restoration efforts in the watershed. A revegetation plan guides efforts to accelerate the recovery of woody plant communities, however there are currently insufficient project funds to fully implement restoration treatments. This proposal was designed to supplement and extend funded revegetation efforts and included the following elements: 1) funding a LEKT revegetation crew to conduct exotic weed control in the project area, funding a LEKT crew to install 250,000+ plants on the dewatered Aldwell reservoir surface, funding a WCC crew to mobilize large wood for erosion control and safe planting sites at both reservoirs. WCC crews were also used to provide logistical support for overall revegetation effort including construction trail access and staging areas to planting sites as well as transporting plant materials from the project greenhouse to staging and planting areas. The net effect of these efforts was to extend exotic weed control efforts through 2015, double planting efforts immediately following dam removal, and provide critical logistical support to the overall revegetation efforts.
