DESCRIPTION
Clallam County used this funding to restore ecological processes of the estuary and lower Dungeness River in the Rivers End area. The project acquired 10 properties totaling 58.74 acres, removed residential structures and septic systems from the floodplain and planted native vegetation. This funding enabled the removal of four single-family residences; project partners funded the removal of three additional dwellings. Planting included approximately 4000 trees and shrubs on the decommissioned lots and on a portion of pasture with an elevation greater than 10 feet, in anticipation of creating a forested floodplain. The project benefits spawning and rearing of summer chum, lower river pink salmon, and Chinook. It will also directly benefit bull trout and all other Dungeness stocks, shellfish, migrating shorebirds and waterfowl, eelgrass and other estuarine resources. Project partners included landowners, Washington Department of Fish and Wildife, US Forest Service, US Fish and Wildlife Service, and North Olympic Land Trust.
