The project created about 5 acres of off-channel river habitat on private land within the project area just north of the WDFW acreage and 3 acres of saltmash opened with the partial removal of a tidal dike on the WDFW property. The 5 acre off-channel habitat is tidally influenced and at higher habitat value than the original plan since it is directly connected to the lower river (see photo attachments). The WDFW property was a retired pasture. We also used the funding to revegetate and maintain plants on about nine upland acres of the properties 40 acres. Other portions of the property are currently being controlled for noxious weeds. The erosion risk assessment did not find any risk to removal of tidal dikes. However it did find a high risk of river channel avulsion across this site. The proposed tidal channels on the WDFW property may have increased avulsion risk, but certainly they would have been blamed for avulsion if it occurred. The Tribe decided to not accept that potential liability. A saltwater intrusion study was inconclusive to the risk of higher well salinities as a result of the project. Based on meetings with the landonwers of the 40 acres saltmarsh, we concluded that working on the private tidelands north of the WDFW property was a better use of this funding.
