DESCRIPTION
North Olympic Salmon Coalition used this funding to replace an undersized culvert with a bridge to restore tidal hydrology and unimpeded fish passage into the Pitship Marsh pocket estuary within the migratory corridor of Sequim Bay on the Olympic Peninsula. The Pitship Marsh complex is a small embayment, with a narrow spit forming across the tidal marsh. The marsh receives freshwater inputs via springs located along the western edge. However, tidal exchange was impaired by the crossing of West Sequim Bay Road, where an undersized culvert connected the marsh to Sequim Bay. This had resulted in the conversion of some salt marsh to freshwater marsh and affected fish passage. Habitat changes of the Pitship Marsh complex from 1870 through 2005 were evaluated, and it was found that the tidal lagoon had been reduced by more than half and the tidal marsh area had been reduced by a quarter (S. Todd et al, 2006). This project replaced the 2.5-foot concrete culvert with a 28-foot concrete bridge and free-flowing channel. It is estimated that this will result in a net increase of 4.2 acres of restored tidal function in the saltmarsh for juvenile salmonid rearing. Saltmarsh is a limited habitat type in Sequim Bay. Access to this salt marsh will allow utilization by out migrating ESA-listed summer chum juveniles from Jimmeycomelately Creek and improve forage fish spwaning as nearshore sediment transport is improved. The new bridge allows for channel movement between the nearshore environment and the estuary and provides much greater connectivity and tidal inundation.
