DESCRIPTION
The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) used this funding to remove tons of fill dirt and log debris and to contour the underlying sand to a natural beach profile at the old log-storage yard at Chimacum Beach in Irondale, WA. The project was designed to to restore estuarine and nearshore habitat for salmon and marine fish and to re-establish the natural beach. The project was completed in spring 2006, restoring nearly 12 acres of intertidal beach and backshore areas adjacent to an existing large eelgrass bed and mudflat at the outlet of Chimacum Creek. The creek supports Hood Canal summer chum, fall chum, coho salmon, cutthroat trout and some steelhead. Summer chum were restored to Chimacum Creek through extensive stream habitat restoration work and artificial rearing projects by local volunteers in cooperation with WDFW. Chum fry leaving freshwater are found in shallow marine nearshore habitat to take advantage of abundant prey and refuge from predators. Restoration of this beach will increase habitat available to chum and Chinook salmon fry, along with other marine species of fish and wildlife. In addition to benefits to local wildlife, salmon and marine resources, the local community gained public access to over 3,000 feet of shoreline for recreation and wildlife viewing, as well as access to uplands associated with lower Chimacum Creek and estuary purchased by WDFW.
