DESCRIPTION
North Olympic Salmon Coalition reconfigured approx.1300 ft of low gradient channelized stream across three parcels of agricultural and commercial lands. Reconfiguration increased channel length and complexity and provided wider floodplain margins. Excavation of the ditched channel created pool habitat and a floodplain bench above the existing confined channel but below the level of the adjacent upland, allowing flood waters to stay in the widening channel, reducing channel overflow and slowing velocity for improved rearing and overwinter habitat for coho, cutthroat and steelhead. The project added anchored logs to provide large woody debris, a significantly missing factor in this watershed. Native plantings created a stream buffer to enhance habitat diversity, restore shade cover and reestablish forested riparian conditions between 150 and 180 ft on each side. The stream provides access to spawning and rearing habitat for coho, steelhead, and cutthroat. Losses of channel complexity, LWD, floodplain capacity and riparian shade are factors for decline of ESA threatened Hood Canal/Strait of Juan de Fuca summer chum in this stream. The project is expected to increase dissolved oxygen and rearing habitats for juvenile salmonids. The project is adjacent to a previously restored channel and is part of a four-year plan to improve habitat in over two miles of ditched stream.
