DESCRIPTION
The Hood Canal Salmon Enhancement Group partnered with the WRP, JCCD, Jefferson Co., local property owners and the WDFW to design, construct and manage this important restoration project on the Little Quilcene River. The Little Quilcene River flows into Quilcene Bay just north of the town of Quilcene. It is 12.2 miles in length, and the combined estuary complex is comprised of approximately 350 acres. Nearly 100 years ago this river was channelized directly into Quilcene Bay and a substantial amount of fill was placed behind the dikes. The project restored more natural estuarine function by removing approximately 1500 feet of dike on the north side of the river and 700 feet of sea-dike from the eastern portion of the estuary. A bridge was installed over Donovan Creek, which flows into the estuary complex of the Little Quilcene estuary and a second culvert was replaced on the west side of Donovan Creek. The project also restored 8.5 acres of ground disturbed by construction. These changes allow the Little Quilcene River to function more naturally and allow tidal and wave action fuller access to the entire northern portion of the larger Quilcene estuary. Summer chum and Chinook, both federally listed, as well as coho, steelhead, pink and cutthroat trout spawn in the Little Quilcene River and utilize the entire Quilcene Bay estuary complex during their juvenile rearing stage
