Hood Canal Salmon Enhancement Group used this funding and partnered with the Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife to design, construct, and manage this important project on Indian George Creek. The creek flows into the west side of Quilcene Bay, one mile south of the mouth of the Big Quilcene River. The 1.7-mile-long stream was once associated with a significant estuary, 7- to 8-acres in size. Nearly 50 years ago the stream was channelized directly into Quilcene Bay, and access roads were constructed across the upper part of the estuary and its outlet. This disconnected the stream from its estuary. The goal of this project was to restore estuary function by eliminating 250-lineal feet of parking lot fill and removing three derelict barges to restore the tidal prism and estuary habitat. This allows wave energy full access to the estuary to remobilize sediments from the fluvial into the marine system. Properly functioning estuaries have long been recognized as very productive aquatic environments. Summer chum and cutthroat inhabit this system. Previously, the Jefferson Conservation District, Wild Olympic Salmon, and the Quilcene-Snow Restoration Team completed the upstream habitat restoration portion (Phase I). This funding helped complete Phase II of this project by restoring the estuary function.
