DESCRIPTION
This project worked with willing landowners between Center Road and Highway 101 in the Little Quilcene River in Quilcene, WA. This is an important reach for summer chum salmon and steelhead salmon, both listed as threatened under federal ESA. It will also benefit coho salmon and cutthroat trout. The objective of the project was to improve existing conditions and create new instream, floodplain and riparian habitats for summer chum salmon and steelhead trout in particular. Increasing woody debris loading will result in several outcomes, including: · Create new side channels and re-engage old side channels to provide improved fish rearing conditions · Increase quality and quantity of instream habitat by breaking up some of the long, straight riffles and providing improved pools and backwater areas with additional cover. · Increase stability of spawning sediments by reducing volume and velocity of water in the mainstem. · Address streambank stability issues identified by the landowners by using bioengineering techniques rather than additional angular riprap. LWD consisted of five different treatment types including bank jams, apex jams, grade control, single wood placements, and log/boulder structures, each with slightly different objectives. These treatment types and their locations are depicted in the attached map and defined on a separate page. In addition to LWD, several spots for riparian plantings have also been identified to increase riparian diversity and to help, in the long term, bank stability.
