DESCRIPTION
The North Olympic Salmon Coalition (NOSC) restored nearshore and estuary habitat in Lower Discovery Bay to benefit ESA-listed Hood Canal Summer Chum and non-natal ESA-listed Puget Sound Chinook. NOSC removed 1,465' of railroad grade dike and embedded waterline, re-Iocated the waterline utility close to the highway, decommissioned a septic system, removed 3 creosote overwater RR trestles, and removed 0.27 miles of shoreline armoring. NOSC also removed 224' of sugar dike and its associated fill alongside the mouth of Snow Creek and constructed 2,513' of new tidal channels. The project also had a marine riparian planting component that resulted in 3.94 acres of new native vegetation within the project area. The resulting project reconnected tidal processes to 22 acres of estuarine habitat and created 1.3 acres of new estuarine intertidal habitat. All lands in this project area are currently owned by WDFW and the Jefferson Land Trust.
