This project acquires two residential properties prone to flooding (1.54 acres), and completes demolition on a third previously purchased property (SRFB 12-1384), with the intent on future restoration to natural riparian conditions as part of a larger ongoing effort to re-establish a channel migration corridor for the lower Big Quilcene River. Three homes, on-site systems and outbuildings were removed (two were demolished and one was relocated up valley), two wells were decommissioned and noxious weeds were controlled and treated with native conifer and shrub establishment. Acquisition of these properties is necessary to implementing restoration concepts and proposals that aim to set back 1,350' of existing riverine levee on the north side of the river in order to improve habitat, floodplain function, and endeavor to manage the floodplain in alignment with community values and priorities (e.g. SRFB #14- 2215 and a pending Jefferson County Floodplains by Design 2015 application). HCSEG is in the process of determining the extent of the project footprint. Project also controlled noxious weeds and planted native plants on an additional 0.5 acre within the greater acquisition area and remains from a semi tractor trailer will be removed. The completed acquisitions are adjacent to open space lands acquired over many years and held by Jefferson County, WDFW, HCSEG, and others to support the vision of a natural functioning Lower Big Quilcene River riparian corridor and estuary. The project will support Hood Canal Summer Chum and Puget Sound Steelhead.
