DESCRIPTION
The Little Anderson Creek IMW Stream Enhancement project had three components. First, in 2015 approximately 300 pieces of woody material were hand installed in a 150 meter incised reach in the West Fork of Little Anderson. Riparian plantings were completed along the stream banks in this reach. The hand-installed pieces stored sand and gravel and created small pools, greatly increasing stream bed roughness and channel complexity in the reach. Second, a conceptual design report for reconnecting the Little Anderson Creek watershed was prepared by an engineering consultant. The third and most significant component of the project was LWD installation throughout approximately 1 mile of the main stem of Little Anderson Creek. Large wood installation in Little Anderson Creek was completed on August 30, 2016. Hood Canal Salmon Enhancement Group (HCSEG) staff Sarah Heerhartz, Mendy Harlow, Clayton David, and Tamara Cowles were on-site during construction to direct Columbia Helicopters (CH) crew during structure placement to ensure that structures were built as laid out in the design drawings. CH installed all material in 4.5 hours on construction day, with two ground crews in place in the creek directing helicopter placement. Woody material was gathered and staged prior to construction day by Cascade Excavators. Structures were built following design plan sketches, with some adjustments in positioning of individual pieces directed by HCSEG staff during construction based on actual size and shape of pieces. Extra material was added in some locations after all designed structures had been built. All structures were built at specific locations that had been selected and mapped ahead of time. All LWD structures have been summarized based on photographs and notes from construction day and an as-built stream walk completed on March 22, 2017 in a final as-built report document. In the first winter post-installation, the wood structures have increased the diversity of habitat types available, including pools and off-channel habitats. Fish population monitoring by WDFW as part of the Hood Canal Intensively Monitored Watersheds (IMW) study will determine whether this new habitat diversity led to greater overwinter survival of juvenile coho in the stream.
