DESCRIPTION
Great Peninsula Conservancy (GPC) conducted a site evaluation and developed a final project design to restore shoreline at Beards Cove at the toe of Hood Canal. This site is part of the Union River Estuary and jointly owned by GPC (14.9 Ac) and the Beards Cove Community Organization (BCCO) (3.9 Ac). The project will remove BCCO recreation buildings, infrastructure and fill from a former tidal area; restore 7.3 acres of estuarine habitat, approx 1,550 ft. of shoreline and 2800 ft. of distributary channels; and remove approx 3 acres of invasive plants and reestablish native vegetation. Restoration will aid the recovery of ESA-listed Hood Canal summer chum and Puget Sound Chinook salmon, and enhance the health of the Union River Estuary and Hood Canal.
The Beards Cove restoration project complements the dike removal and wetland restoration completed on Great Peninsula Conservancy’s adjacent 90-acre Klingel Wildlife Refuge in 2011. The project will add 7.3 acres of important estuarine habitat to Hood Canal, and reestablish habitat connectivity between the Klingel Refuge and a large, adjacent Department of Fish and Wildlife property. The project site is part of an 650-acre Lynch Cove Conservation Area. GPC contracted with an engineering design firm with experience in developing restoration plans in the Puget Sound Region. With extensive community involvement from BCCO, GPC and WDFW the consultant produced final project plans with technical specification and final construction quantities and costs. Contract bidding documents and general contract conditions were completed for the project. Permitting documents have been prepared in preparation for filing. The Beards Cove Restoration Design is ready to permit, bid, and implement.
