DESCRIPTION
This shoreline landowner was recruited by the Hood Canal Coordinating Council through the Community Nearshore Restoration Program and provided 24 hours of their time to complete the project. The Mason Conservation District provided a plan that describes measures to restore native vegetation along 60' of the shoreline of Hood Canal. The purpose of this project is to primarily reintroduce salt-tolerant native plants to the site, to enhance marine wildlife habitat and encourage landowners and local landscapers/nurseries to conduct these types of projects. The Mason Conservation District provided a Conservation Planting Plan that is designed to provide guidance on the addition of appropriate native plants for the site. To continue to build the riparian area, a relationship has been developed between the landowner, Mason Conservation District and Belfair Valley Nursery.
Restoration: The landowner chose at this time to plant a small area of the yard to complete site 1 in the planting plan. The project removed some ornamental plants that have become overgrown and replaced them with suitable native plants that will require less attention once established such as Gaultheria shallon (Salal), Mahonia aquifoliu (Oregon grape), Carex oshimensis (Evergold Carex), A Thuja plicata (Western Red Cedar), was planted to replace an unhealthy tree that was close to the house.
