DESCRIPTION
As part of the Community Nearshore Restoration Program, the Dewatto community was identified as an area of focus that has the potential to see increased development in the near future. Along the Dewatto area shoreline, from Bald Point to the Mason County line, it was estimated to have 18 parcels with full time residents out of 200 parcels total. With advice from the citizen advisory group and the Port of Dewatto, the CNRP program was developed around growth potential using conservation tools and centers the restoration around the Dewatto Bay restoration project.
The program conducted an "Open House" that provided information on conservation incentives, on-site education, natural landscape techniques, and water quality Best Management Practices (BMP's). About 50 part time and full time residents attended. A field trip was provided at the Dewatto Bay and discussed a proposed project. It provided the opportunity to discuss salmon cycle and habitat needs. To further the contact with the local residents, information was provided at the "Dewatto Daze" community event.
These efforts resulted in scheduling two beach walks hosted by a private property owners and a community meeting of shoreline residents. This enabled us to discuss shoreline living and concerns with about 40 shoreline landowners. Three community leaders volunteered to continue contact with HCCC so information and concerns can be shared.
