DESCRIPTION
Approximately 45 acres of prime wetlands have been cut off from normal tidal action by a historic dike in the esturary of the Union River. This situation is now reverseable. The goal of this project was to develop a plan to breach the existing dike and return the wetlands to prime salmonid habitat, while maintaining trail access for the community. Specifically we utilized existing, conceptual-level information to develop final design and permitting so construction can start in the 2012 window. This effort developed several dike-breaching alternatives to maximize the restoration opportunity while maintaining trail access. This project undertook public and stakeholder outreach efforts in the form of public notices and meetings using presentation and workshop formats in order to seek input from all interested parties. This resulted in an environmental and community driven design that makes best use of this critical piece of land.
