DESCRIPTION
The primary purpose and outcome of the project was to hierarchically identify reaches, sub-reaches, and individual project sites where large woody materials could be effectively used to restore salmonid fish habitat in the lower 4.25 miles of the Tahuya River. Project tasks have included: identification and description of project reaches with identification of reach-scale needs, goals, and objectives; documentation of the active channel migration zone; inventory of in-channel LWD size, distribution, and condition; a riparian vegetation assessment; and the identification, ranking, and conceptual design of LWD structures to be distributed along the assessment reach.
The Tahuya River supports multiple species of Pacific salmon and trout, including ESA-listed summer chum salmon and steelhead. Several partners including the Hood Canal Salmon Enhancement Group and the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife began to reintroduce summer chum salmon with a supplementation program in 2000. This supplementation project is ending in the summer of 2011. We are focusing on improving instream and riparian habitat in the lower Tahuya River so that we maximize productivity of natural origin summer chum salmon recruits before the supplementation program ends.
For study and evaluation purposes, the lower, 4.25-mile-long section of the Tahuya River encompassed by the project area was divided into six separate reaches. These Lower Tahuya Reaches were described in detail and evaluated in the Lower Tahuya River Reach Assessment and Conceptual Large Woody Debris Placement Plan that was prepared by the consulting firm: The Watershed Company (TWC). TWC scored projects within these reaches based on biological factors, project feasibility, and potential public involvement and developed a prioritized list of projects within each reach.
