DESCRIPTION
South Puget Sound Salmon Enhancement Group (SPSSEG) used this funding to remove a problematic bulkhead in Eld Inlet directly across from Frye Cove County Park. The bulkhead was made from eco-blocks; it was 110 feet long and encroached 35 feet onto the beach. At about 6 feet tall, the bulkhead limited potential forage fish beach spawning habitat and refuge areas for young salmon. It did not offer habitat advantages for any estuarine species. This project removed the bulkhead and its associated fill material and replaced it with a narrower rock wall. The narrower structure allows more upland sediment to accrue-this was largely prevented by the former bulkhead. Large woody material was placed and anchored in front to the new wall to additionally enhance habitat values. The adjacent upland bank was planted with native riparian shrub species.
