DESCRIPTION
This project seeks to protect a strategic reach of the Deschutes River, the floodplain and off-channel habitat, as well as a small area of uplands with development potential. This 21-acre property is located is a sharp bend in the Deschutes River, incorporating approximately 1,900 feet of the Deschutes River and its shoreline. The majority of the property is river floodplain that has historically been used for agriculture, with a wetland that connects to the river during high flows. The property is directly adjacent to the Chehalis Western Trail and approximately 50 acres of land owned by Thurston County Parks Department. There are ample opportunities for habitat restoration activities on the property, including riparian buffer planting, in-stream habitat improvements, and upland planting, which we will pursue in the future, independent of this grant application.
