A total of 1,110 acres of the Grayland were purchased and permanently protected under Phase 1. During the due diligence activities, the appraisal determined the value of the entire ~1,670 acres to be purchased was >$3.2M. This exceeded the funding that DU had secured from State (RCO/WCRI) and Federal (USFWS / NCWCG) sources. Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) provided an additional $763,764.92 in federal and non-federal funding. Ducks Unlimited negotiated a “phased” approach for acquisition of the entire property which included 16 individual tax parcels. During Phase 1, this grant and its match along with other funds provided by WDFW were able to successfully fee-simple purchase and permanently protect 1,110 acres of the Grayland Property. Ownership and management responsibilities were immediately accepted by WDWF, as the property was established as a new management unit of an existing Wildlife Area. The property was named the Elk River Unit of the Johns River Wildlife Area. In addition to closing on Phase 1 parcels, Ducks Unlimited also negotiated a Purchase and Sale Agreement (PSA) for the remaining available parcels that consisted of 560 acres. During the Spring 2019, WDFW secured sufficient funding through state sources (RCO / WWRP) to purchase the remaining acres as a Fee-Simple transaction, as Phase 2. WDWF closed on Phase 2 on December 13, 2019. A combined 1,670 acres were purchased and permanently protected in Phases 1 and 2.
