DESCRIPTION
The primary objective of the Van Ornum Creek Barrier Removal is to replace an existing fish passage barrier with a fish passable structure. Culvert 021(24034)(02386) is an existing 4' round corrugated metal pipe, located at MP 2.386 on Bunker Creek Road, on Van Ornum Creek. This culvert is under ownership of Lewis County. It was calculated to be 33 percent passable due high velocity flows. The culvert is ranked 17th for replacement within the upper Chehalis Basin and 4th on a list of priority culverts to be replaced that are owned by Lewis County. Replacement of this culvert is anticipated to restore access to an additional 6.45 linear miles of potential habitat; 11,472 square meters of rearing habitat and 1,575 square meters of spawning habitat. A priority index of 18.47 was generated for this culvert.
The Van Ornum Creek Barrier Removal project provided a final design and permits to replace an existing fish passage barrier with a fish passable structure. Lewis County culvert number 021(24034)(02386) is an existing 4 foot round corrugated metal pipe, located at mile post 2.386 on Bunker Creek Road, on Van Ornum Creek. This culvert is under ownership of Lewis County and is calculated to be 33 percent passable due high velocity flows. Replacement of this culvert is anticipated to restore access to 6.45 linear miles of potential habitat; 11,472 square meters of rearing habitat and 1,575 square meters of spawning habitat for coho salmon.
A final design packet with 100 percent plans, a cost estimate, a design report and special provisions has been developed for the Van Ornum Barrier Replacement. The bridge was designed to be wider than originally planned to account for adjacent landowner equipment transport which increased the area footprint from 0.5 to 1.8 acres.
