DESCRIPTION
With this acquisition project, the Heernett Environmental Foundation protected 52.92 acres, and approximately 70 acre feet of active water rights along the Chehalis River in south Thurston County. This acquisition promotes future restoration and education phases of work on this property to include but not limited to: installing a living flood fence, implementing new riparian zones, enhancing/protecting water storage areas, instream complexity/diversity enhancements, developing outdoor educational areas, and developing new pilot programs to create long-term restoration ecosystem functions and processes. The holistic approach of this project addressed priority actions in the Chehalis Basin Strategy, including conservation and protection of ecological integrity and biological functions, and augmentation of instream flow for this reach of Scatter Creek and the Chehalis River. This property supports over 18 acres of established riparian habitat, over 9770 linear feet of active salmonid habitat, and essential hydrological features unique to this basin. Acquiring this property, with its high level of productive habitat and ground water connectivity, provided abundant long-term functional benefits to both the lower reach of Scatter Creek and the upper Chehalis River, as well as, support environmental, social, cultural values in this region. The project also protected approximately 5 acres of Scatter Creek floodplain, and provided critical protection of habitat for coho and chum salmon and cutthroat trout.
