DESCRIPTION
With this project Wild Fish Conservancy proposes to design and construct the restoration of a 2,100 ft. long reach of Allen Creek, tributary to Beaver Creek in Thurston County. We will abandon the 1,600 ft. long ditched section of Allen Creek that runs adjacent to Case Rd. and restore flow to its historical location in a sinuous channel. This project was identified as a priority opportunity after WFC performed an extensive water type assessment throughout the Allen Creek watershed.
Within the newly designed and constructed historic channel WFC will substantially increase the quality and quantity of instream and riparian habitat using techniques described in the Salmon Habitat Restoration Guidelines (SHRG). Project elements include large woody debris complexes and extensive riparian plantings to restore, to the extent possible, the natural processes that create and maintain the suite of habitat conditions that existed historically. Species to benefit include coho, steelhead, sea-run and resident cutthroat trout, and Olympic mudminnow. As required, project deliverables will include Conceptual Design, Preliminary Design, Final Design, Construction, and As-builts.
Through outreach and education, this highly visible project will demonstrate that healthy streams and rural living / agriculture are not mutually exclusive. There are many other similar opportunities within the greater Beaver Creek watershed and throughout the Chehalis; with this project we hope to stimulate landowner support for additional projects.
NOTES
The landowner, Dexius, has pledged considerable resources as match ($2,500.00), including equipment, trees, and shrubs. WFC has applied to the USFWS for additional match as well.
This project was not approved for SRFB funding in 2012 and is in wastebasket status in PRISM.
10/2021 Update: WFC confirmed this project was completed with USFWS funding; see that project under "related projects."
