DESCRIPTION
This project consisted of removing a fish passage barrier and installing a new driveway for the landowner and abandoning the current crossing location over Mills Creek in Lewis County. The barrier was an undersized culvert with an outfall drop of .25 meters. There will be 5.67 miles of habitat opened up for anadromous fish usage. The project is located on Mill Creek a tributary to the Chehalis River. Mill Creeks headwaters flow out of woodland acreage and into a rural residential area which is the stream segment where this project is located. The project location is 2.43 miles upstream from the confluence to the Chehalis River. Mill Creek flows into the Chehalis River at River Mile 78. The fish species that will benefit from this project are coho, steelhead, coastal cutthroat, and resident trout. The Lewis County Conseravtion District submitted match funding through the United States Fish and Wildlife Service for this project. The Chehalis Basin Salmon Habitat Restoration and Preservation Work Plan for WRIAs 22 and 23 Strategic Plan for Salmon Recovery states that inventories show numerous barriers have been documented as impassible to wild salmonids and that replacing or removing these dysfunctional culverts is a very high priority. Furthermore, the Work Plan sites Fish passage as a tier 1 concern. This site was prioritized as the 5th worst blockage remaining in the Chehalis River basin to be corrected.
