DESCRIPTION
Lewis County used this funding for a restoration project located in Lucas Creek, a tributary to the Newaukum River, which flows into the Chehalis River. The project replaced an barrier culvert with an 18-foot diameter round structural culvert set at a level slope across Lucas Creek Road at MP 5.173. The previous culvert was a velocity barrier under most flow conditions to migrating adult anadromous fish. The previous culvert also had a 1-foot drop at the outlet that was a 100% barrier to juvenile upstream migration. The project excavated 100 feet of the existing channel down approximately 6 feet and installed ten V-shaped rock bands, each measuring approximately 15-feet long by 4-feet tall by 6-feet wide for grade control. The rock bands started in the plunge pool at the outfall of the culvert and continued through the culvert to the upstream end of the project area. They were constructed of rip-rap (1' to 2' diameter) with streambed gravels placed between the weirs. The project anchored large woody debris with chains and clevis pins into some of the weirs to provide fish habitat. The project restored fish passage to 2.8 stream miles. Lewis County conducted visual fish monitoring in the spring and fall for three years after construction using WDFW protocols. Replacing this fish passage barrier opened up more than 4,113 square miles of spawning habitat and 9,241 square miles of rearing habitat. Salmonid species documented included: Chinook salmon, coho salmon, steelhead trout, resident and sea run cutthroat trout, and rainbow trout.
