DESCRIPTION

This grant will fund continued restoration through the treatment of invasive plants in the lower Quinault River floodplain on the Quinault Indian Reservation. The project area is located from lower Quinault River mile 20 to 25 (5 miles) covering an area of 4,222 acres. The proposed project is a continuation of a multi-year program to control knotweed and reed canary grass in the Quinault River Watershed using a "top-down" treatment approach. The overall goal of the project is to restore native vegetation and improve riparian and instream salmon habitat conditions. The purpose of the proposed restoration project is to reduce infestations of knotweed and reed canary grass to maintenance levels using topical herbicide treatments and seed source removal methods. Knotweed and reed canary grass negatively affect riparian functions and salmon habitat by displacing native vegetation that would otherwise support natural riparian and floodplain forest ecosystem functions. These invasive plants contribute to soil erosion, impair water quality, create a gap in the aquatic food web, and choke out stream channels used by salmon. Priority salmonid species benefitting from this project include chinook, chum, coho, sockeye, steelhead, cutthroat, and Dolly Varden/Bull trout native to Quinault River Watershed.
