Invasive plant prevention and control and native grass reseeding was conducted in the Goodman Creek watershed over 2019 and 2020, and with an extension to 2023, in the creek’s channel, banks, side-channels and off-channel complexes, and in uplands on willing landowner properties. Reed canarygrass and Canada thistle are the most common in the creek valley, and tansy ragwort and Scotch broom in the uplands. In each of the three active years, the project completely surveyed eight of 14 river miles, and over the three years, covered a total of 14.57 river and riparian miles including the lower floodplain reaches of three tributaries. The total treated creek valley area for reed canarygrass and Canada thistle is 88 acres. The total surveyed road and upland harvest unit area is 24 acres, with 1 acre of treatment on tansy ragwort and Scotch broom. Maps and photos are included in Attachments. In a strategy that mimics natural processes of seed flow in rivers, native grass seed was distributed into the creek during high water flow from six bridge and road-adjacent sites upstream of dense populations where treatments were conducted in 2019, intended to reach 0.25 miles downstream, seeding 1.5 miles of stream banks and floodplain. Water ‘plants’ tiny seeds more effectively than a rake or trowel. Delays in access agreements meant that not all of the creek or upper reaches of tributaries were surveyed and treated after 2019, and no surveys were conducted in 2021 or 2022, so we are regrettably not expending all of the available funding, and did not accomplish as much as needed to be done in terms of control actions. While reed canarygrass and Canada thistle remain present and will continue to require treatment in the 12.25 mile long river corridor above the most densely invaded lower 2.3 miles in the coastal strip of Olympic National Park, the overall reduction has been significant; and is important in protecting the investments made and planned in habitat restoration including large wood installation intended to restore floodplain and side-channel flow and pool development, and planting native species in the riparian. Each stem that is stopped from going to seed slows and reduces the areas invaded, the impacts to habitats and species, and reduces the costs of detection and response. Many reaches of Goodman Creek that would by now be filled with deep mats of this aggressive rhizomatous grass species are now free of reed canarygrass.
