DESCRIPTION
To protect all aquatic, floodplain, and riparian habitats of Goodman Creek, crews will map and control invasive reed canarygrass (RCG), and other priority invasives found along the road approaches and the entire fourteen-mile length of stream channel, active floodplain, and invaded parts of seven tributaries. RCG affects riparian succession, fills channels, eliminates habitats for diverse species, and impairs water flow and temperature. Also, we collect seeds per established protocols, and distribute them in late fall, early winter in areas of dense infestations of RCG and herb Robert, in particular. Goodman Creek is an independent coastal watershed located to the north of the Hoh and south of the Quillayute watersheds. The stream originates in the foothills of the Olympic Mountains and flows westward to the Pacific Ocean within a shared treaty area of the Quileute and Hoh tribes. Species inhabiting the creek are coastal fall Coho, fall Chinook, and chum salmon, winter steelhead, cutthroat trout, bull trout, and Pacific lamprey. Winter steelhead are prized for recreational fishing.Mapping began in 2016, with a full sweep along the main channel, side-channels, off-channel complexes, and on all road crossings in 2017, treating 20 of 307 surveyed acres. Projects require treatment for four years or until RCG is no longer found. Effectiveness surveys in 2018 show a significant reduction in live stems and seeds. Comparisons will be provided in maps and tables.
