DESCRIPTION
This project will acquire and restore properties in the North Fork Nooksack River. the acquired properties will enhance connectivity of habitat, including side channels, stream beds, riparian forest to main stem of the North Fork. The overall goal is to protect Tier 1 Chinook Salmon habitat and habitat-forming natural processes, and to reduce channel instability and scouring in the lower North Fork.
This project will acquire and restore two properties (18 acres) in the forested floodplain of the North Fork Nooksack River. the acquired properties will enhance connectivity of habitat, including side channels, stream beds, riparian forest to main stem of the North Fork. The overall goal is to protect Tier 1 Chinook Salmon habitat and habitat-forming natural processes, and to reduce channel instability and scouring in the lower North Fork. The project site is a forested floodplain situated adjacent to the mainstem of the North Fork Nooksack River, recently used for recreational purposes in the summer. The forest consists of mature hardwood trees and some Sitka Spruce in the areas of the property further from the River and mostly immature hardwoods throughout the side-channel areas and alongside the main stem that would provide high quality side channel rearing habitat for salmon if left alone and interplanted with conifers. The properties are 70% within the HMZ + 300 ft chinook habitat area.
