DESCRIPTION
Project will construct log jams to implement Phase 1 of restoration in the Maple Creek reach. Restoration is designed to implement two Tier 1 (highest priority) restoration strategies for the reach:
1. Construct/augment log jams to protect, encourage formation and growth of forested islands (especially upstream of tributary confluences)
2. Log jams to reconnect side channels (provide for flows during spawning/incubation, prevent major avulsion).
Conceptual design is complete and preliminary design is in development.
The Nooksack Tribe restored instream and side channel habitat in the North Fork Nooksack River, RM 49.8-50.1, near Maple Falls in Whatcom County. The goal is to address North/Middle Fork Nooksack early chinook limiting factors of high channel instability and low habitat diversity. Specifically, this project constructed 27 log jams (including 5 flood fences or 255 feet of floodplain fencing) in a 0.43-mile river segment, completing phase 1 of restoration in the broader North Fork Nooksack River Maple Creek reach (RM 49.8-50.6). Log jams were designed to: (1) increase length of stable side channels available for spawning, (2) form pools and increase habitat diversity, (3) promote forested island formation and persistence, and (4) encourage persistence of tributary habitat in West Fork Maple Creek. NF/MF Nooksack early chinook are a genetically unique chinook population that is essential for ESU recovery, but productivity is critically low. This project implemented high priority actions in a high priority reach for NF/MF Nooksack early Chinook. Restoration also benefits ESA-listed steelhead and bull trout, coho, chum, and pink salmon, and cutthroat trout. Given the forestry-dominated land use along the left bank and the Whatcom Land Trust ownership along the right bank, the Maple reach presented an important opportunity to restore habitat-forming processes in the North Fork. The reach is also just upstream from, and extends habitat restoration efforts in, the Farmhouse reach.
