DESCRIPTION
The goal of this project is to restore salmonid (focusing on Chinook, steelhead, coho and bull trout) spawning, rearing and holding habitat in order to recover self-sustaining salmonid runs to harvestable levels, by addressing limiting factors of temperature, channel stability, and habitat diversity and quantity in the reach. The Lummi Nation proposes to construct 12 engineered log jams (ELJs) in the mainstem Middle Fork Nooksack River, consisting of 5 Type 2 ELJs and 7 Type 3 ELJs. Endangered early spring Chinook salmon and bull trout will benefit from 12 secondary pools; more pools may develop indirectly as increased roughness causes dynamic equilibrium. Scour pools provide thermal refugia from elevated Middle Fork water temperatures during summer spawning months in addition to pools for juvenile overwintering. For the Porter Creek alluvial fan portion of the project, sections of the right levee on the right bank of Porter Creek will be breached or removed to allow development of Porter Creek's alluvial fan. Large logs, held in place with posts, will be placed in the distal fan to help capture sediment to further enhance the fan. Logs along the banks of Porter Creek may be toppled to help direct high flows into the forested side channels on the right bank, providing refugia habitat for juvenile salmonids. Juvenile salmonids will benefit from 1.0 mile of side channel rearing habitat in the Porter Creek area by increasing connectivity with the floodplain and side channels.
