DESCRIPTION
This project will open up 1.72 miles of fish passage by replacing two culverts at Haxton Way and Lummi Shore Road and remove two field culverts considered to be passage barriers on Smuggler's Slough. An inventory and measurement of beaver structures is proposed to assist in the operation of the recently installed self regulating tide-gate to allow more flow into the project area. Monitoring of water levels, fish presence and water quality will also continue at additional sites within the overall Smuggler's Slough project area.
This project opened up 2.04 miles of fish passage by replacing two culverts at Haxton Way and Lummi Shore Road along Smuggler's Slough. One field culvert was also removed by an unknown person, which improved flow on Smuggler’s Slough. An inventory and measurement of beaver structures was conducted several times, as beavers continued to build structures to impede flow. Monitoring of water levels, fish presence and water quality was also conducted at additional sites in the area known as Upper Smuggler's Slough. This work is continuing into 2018. A cost increase of 35K was requested in fall 2016 due to items not anticipated in the first cost estimate prepared by the engineer who left the firm. This was granted, as well as an extension to the end date to 6/30/17.
