The North Fork Nooksack River (Xwqélém) Farmhouse Reach Restoration Project is located between River Mile (RM) 46.8 and 49.4 in Whatcom County. The project included the construction of Farmhouse Phase 1 and the final design of Phase 2a and 2b of the phased reach-scale Farmhouse project. The Phase 1 project constructed 27 log jams in the upstream (RM 48.2 - 48.8) portion of the Farmhouse Project Reach in 2014. The primary goal of the reach-scale project is to address early chinook limiting factors of high channel instability, lack of key habitat, and reduced habitat diversity by restoring habitat conditions and addressing the root causes of habitat degradation in the Farmhouse reach. Desired outcomes of restoration include: (1) reduced lateral migration to allow transient river bars and incipient forest islands along the margins of the historic migration area to stabilize and immature floodplain vegetation to reach a size (50-years) where it can produce functional wood to the channel; (2) increased pool habitat throughout the reach; (3) improved low flow connectivity of the existing side channels; and (4) increased stable spawning habitat of the reach, especially in side channel areas. Restoration is designed to benefit Nooksack early chinook egg-to emergence and early rearing survival by restoring stable side channels; there will be collateral benefits to other species that use the reach (steelhead, bull trout, coho, chum, sockeye, pink, cutthroat trout). This proposal also included the final design of the Phase 2a and 2b restoration projects. The Phase 2a construction grant was #14-1655; phase 2a constructed 7 ELJ's in 2015. The Phase 2b construction grant is #15-1287; phase 2b constructed 19 ELJ's this past summer (2016).
