DESCRIPTION
The objective of this project was to improve riparian conditions on the South Fork Nooksack River and several tributaries. Riparian habitat in the South Fork Nooksack Watershed has been degraded by past forestry and agricultural land use practices. 34 acres were planted with appropriate native vegetation and maintained for a period of 3 years. The South Fork Nooksack Watershed supports ESA listed chinook, steelhead and bull trout as well as coho and resident and sea-run cutthroat trout. Improvements in riparian vegetation will benefit multiple salmonid species and lifestages by providing shade and cover, reducing erosion, filtering inputs from adjacent agricultural lands, and providing a future source of LWD. South Fork summer water temperature is a major limiting factor for ESA listed spring chinook. This project was listed on the 2008 WRIA 1 Salmonid Recovery Plan 3 year list of priority projects. SRFB Project # 07-1828R funding was used to acquire the largest of project sites for restoration and conservation.
