DESCRIPTION

Whatcom Land Trust will use this grant to acquire fee simple interest to approximately 22 acres to protect salmon and wildlife habitat in Whatcom County near Glacier. The property is located adjacent to a 44 acre land trust owned salmon preserve fronting the North Fork of the Nooksack River. Both the acquisition property and the preserve will protect Bottiger's Pond, a large floodplain wetland complex, which is connected to the North Fork. The acquisition will help conserve the ecological integrity and habitat diversity in the North Fork. The acquisition of this floodplain wetland protects habitat diversity and contributes to the protection of water quality and base flow necessary to support the recovery of Chinook salmon, winter steelhead, bull trout and other salmonids in the Nooksack River. The Cornell Reach of the North Fork is ranked high priority for both acquisition and restoration in the WRIA1 Salmon Recovery Plan.
