DESCRIPTION
South Fork Nooksack early Chinook are considered essential for ESU recovery, but abundances are critically low and immediate action is necessary to ensure population persistence. This project constructed 19 engineered log jams in the South Fork Nooksack River, RM 9.65-10.25 (.6 miles). Nine log jams were constructed through the upper portion of the reach in 2012, and ten log jams were constructed along the left bank through the lower portion of the reach in 2014, along with removal of 120 feet of riprap along that bank. Log jams were designed to: (1) increase key habitat quantity (increase number and depth of pools for holding and rearing, number of pool tailouts for spawning); (2) Increase habitat diversity (i.e. increase quantity of complex wood cover in low-flow channel, increase habitat unit diversity); (3) increase channel length; and (4) increase floodplain connectivity. When first proposed for funding in 2011, the project reach ranked 9th of 25 South Fork project areas; projects in 5 of the 8 higher ranking reaches had been complete or were in progress. The reach also presented a unique opportunity to work in a relatively unconfined reach in the Lower South Fork where the channel can more naturally respond to log jams.
