DESCRIPTION
Maple Creek Reach Acquisition and Restoration acquired three properties: 1 - A 12 acre tract of land on the North Fork of the Nooksack River with 766 feet of frontage, remove several acres of Scotch broom, and established 5 acres of riparian floodplain forest; and, 2 - A 20.6 acre tract of land on the North Fork, contiguous to the first property, with 700 feet of frontage. 3 - This grant also supported the acquisiton of Bottiger's Pond II, primarily acquired with 11-1430 North Fork Reach Acquisition. Acquisition is facilitating ongoing reach level restoration and provides long term protection of riparian and floodplain habitat. The project is situated in a high priority reaches for both restoration and protection. The site is adjacent to a land owned by State of Washington and nearby a 78 acre protected salmon habitat reserve on Maple Creek. The project benefits the following fish resources: Spring Chinook, Bull Trout, and Winter Steelhead populations, listed as federally threatened under the Endangered Species Act, as well as Coho, Chum, Pink, and Sockeye salmon. Channel stability and key habitat quantity are the primary limiting factors in the North Fork. Acquisition of this site and re-establishing mature riparian forest allows for wood recruitment through natural floodplain processes, which will protect critical habitat, provide long term stability in side channels, backwaters, floodplain tributaries, and sloughs in the North Fork. Riparian Restoration was led by project partner Nookack Salmon Enhancement Association on the first tract. Whatcom Land Trust is pursing other restoration actions to improve salmon habitat across the three properties owned by the land trust in Maple Creek Reach.
